First I have the need or a project.

Interesting that videos are a top answer and asking a friend isn’t. Do the friends lack expertise or do the voters prefer to not ask someone for help?

In the animation studio - first was to try, then ask anyone, then research (often slow and painful).

Personally I find with tech stuff it can be really hard to convey and recieve person to person. With the basic stuff it isn't so bad. But if I had to teach someone back propagation through matracies it's going to be rough. For some things you are just going to have to read.

Videos are a notoriously bad way to learn. Research has shown you learn and retain less info per minute than almost anything. But videos are nice for ice breaking a topic that you just aren't getting if the documentation is over your head. And you half the time can find something specific to exactly what you need. Depends on the search gods. But with a friend it's a lot to ask "hey, teach me this college/pro level thing right now on the spot with no preperation that you haven't touched yourself in a few years." With video someone did the research, wrote the outline, made the video, and it's ready to watch search gods willing.

But with those positives for video, research and experience tells us you are learning a lot less per minute than it feels like.

Really it depends on the depth of knowledge required.

How do I change my cursor size?

How do I set up a new platform in Docker on my VPS?

These are two very different depths.

Probably if you do have friends you might not have one who knows about a specific peace of technology. Videos of tech explanations are a click away. It's very easy to learn new tech these days.
