The notion of digging a tunnel to escape is dubious. Maybe if it's old concrete from the 1920's or whatever, but I doubt it's like they claim.

I'm more than a little skeptical of this story.
It's probably a "Made It Happen On Purpose" incident, so they can get a massive increase in prison budgets, or to distraction operation to cover up another crime that occurred simultaneously.
The World Trade Centers stored hundreds of tons of gold, which disappeared on the morning of 9/11. One of the armored trucks in the heist got stuck, and they abandoned it.
Funny how the coincidental gold heists don't get mentioned in any anniversary reporting...
Maybe they dug out of the yard. Or they had some kind of work duty that gave them access to the basement and there was a gap in the concrete for some utility reason. Sump pump or other.
