It's the same network as Lemmy (ActivityPub/Fediverse), just another software to view/post. I heard the devs are sane though, and not China fans as Lemmy devs.
AP supports blacklisting and hopefully whitelisting as well so that any instance can decide to just only federate with sane communities such as Hilarious Chaos. There should be an alternative federation of conspiracy realists on the same network imo, they can just only federate with each other.
I didn't look at PieFed closely - there are a few instances, maybe users are somewhat different, more centrist or who knows :)
Btw, it's not only a view - PieFed can theoretically introduce some features which Lemmy doesn't have and still be compatible, for example, tags for posts.
I just looked at it. It looks like piefed is sorting content very differently. Both lemmy and piefed are aggregating each other on their front pages, but they have very different content even when you set them to the same algorithm label (hot vs active). Very different styles of content.
On lemmy it's a myth that finding the right instance will make it good or give you a better userbase to interact with. By in large every instance just federates the bulk of other instances and so it really is one userbase. It's a centralized result built on a distributed stack.
It's like email. The domain you pick is just a domain that gets attached to your username. In theory gmail could stop exchanging email with yahoo. But they don't. So email is just email. And lemmy is just lemmy.

Right. But like you said it's just a view portal and it has lemmy users. And after the Charlie Kirk thing these people are at peak insanity.
