I guess this is more of a question, but is there a list of all subs somewhere? It would also be useful if the field for sub on the submit page started suggesting subs as you type.
I just made /substats https://matrix.gvid.tv/substats I should have it linked at the top soon. It should help. Then the code for this should be a step in the direction of getting helpers on the submission forms. This only has the top subs because since you can fill in anything there are some real wild ones. But if it is in the top 25 of either daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly it is in.
Per the question basically there are infinite subs. Almost anything you could come up with without spaces is a sub. Things with differing capitalization are treated the same. That would be interesting if as you type it suggests the most popular like that. I would have to rank the subs which I haven't done yet. Basically if it seems like it should be a sub it basically is. As for whether it is better to post to something specific or general I think it is good for there to be a mix of both. Like for example I was posting something and the question was do I put it in Music or FolkPunk. I think it's good to do a bit of both. But what I think I'm going to do is add a sub stats link at the top that should make it easier for people to find the top and most relevant subs. From that I might be able to base the sub suggestions. But in any case that should give some sense of where someone could post something to a place with some activity. Another thing that is only partially relevant but I should mention is that I'm planning on doing sub of the days roughly around which subs get visited without much content. So if you post something to an empty-ish sub and a lot of people interact with it you might effect the sub of the day.
Because I posted that twice a little different. The comment counter doesn't currently drop when someone deletes a comment. You'd be surprised how many forums that's true on. That's another small bug to fix. But I do things in priority order and I actually consider your thing a higher priority.
