You would think with her having residency there she would be given an opportunity to pay rent the next month to the building itself. When these states have issues with squatters and the law protects them, this is the scenario those laws are actually for. In America people who have never had a lease have a right to avoid eviction, and people who are current on their lease do not. Crazy.
