It's a PITA to setup multi-end encryption in Jabber. OMEMO is supported by a bunch of clients but I find it to simply not be reliable for the only good Desktop clients which are Pidgin and Psi+. Problems with messages that do not get delivered to one of the clients, messages that don't send. This is what happens when e2ee happens through a plugin. Meanwhile gay tricks has e2ee configured automatically, they can do that since it's supported across the board between desktop, mobile and web apps.

Movim is one option that can work more reliable on the desktop but even they stopped enabling e2ee automatically because too many people complained about it not working. It's just my personal experience with Movim is decent. At the same time I hate using a web app for simple chats and I don't like its cluttered interface and how it doesn't display correctly on firefags.
