Long story short (as possible), I have a spotify sub because my wife was sharing an account with a massive cunt, and I wanted to end that. They're raising prices again soon, and I really want to just go back to MP3s. When I read, I listen to Lo-Fi, and torrents are all dead and youtube is usually just one long video with multiple tracks. I looked around and found this. Works quite well.

Also take a look at Streamrip which lets you download from Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, and SoundCloud.

I was tempted to make my own spotify at one point. It would be so easy. But I have enough projects going on. My real motivation was kind of silly. I just want menus that are safer to operate while driving. Hitting search icon, then search bar, then highlight what is filled in, then clear, then type. It's actually dangerous. Searching should be one interaction, not five. I know you shouldn't be messing with spotify at all while driving anyway but it happens. And if an app is used while driving it needs to be frustration free. And spotify wants to be frustrating if you haven't paid for it. It's kind of evil.

Another alternative I played with is because I kind of like the idea of my music being networked from a larger service instead of static files on the phone (I'm kind of cloud first if it is my cloud), is just running an http-directory with music and then using the VLC app. The VLC app is basically built for that setup being half decent. You can basically shuffle anything in a directory. So you can just torrent directly into that directory structure and you have something reasonable with no transferring. If you want to make playlists just make another directory and symbolic link to the files you want. And this can run on a desktop with infinite storage and then get this on public web with either port-forwarding or wire-guarding it to a VPS.

I am looking into setting up my own server. Navidrome for the server, picard for tagging, Symfonium for the client. I've looked into a lot of different combinations, and this seems to be the best balance of ease and quality (while remaining free).

That's probably smarter. It's not hard to beat Spotify in terms of interface. I do like Spotify for music discovery. That's it's one advantage.

Spotify saved my love life. You think some burrito will stick with you as hard as https://open.spotify.com/track/2mlh8fBK1wFPW5PgHYCjbN?si=RjFcGgj4THm70hiMIO7vKgNIGS ?

nah bro.

Oh man, there is so much in this post.

Why are you using spotify? It's dumb.
Why is your wife interacting with a cunt on a mutal level? If shes a cunt she should like how I am on this site.
Why did you tolerate this for so long that it actually lasted to a point where you had to end it?
Lo-fi? Seriously? You're a man (I think), you need angry, you need epic, you need to want to conquer Europe!
Torrents are not dead. Torrent are alive, russia is where the party is at.
You tube is great for music. I've been downloading music off it for ages now, the trick is just finding the music you want.

The first 3, convenience.

Lofi during reading because I don't want some mf screaming in my ear while I'm reading treebeard's conversation with Gandalf.

There are a handful of torrents for lofi collections and they are all dead. Fancy elevator music isn't popular among the "youth."

I opened the app, clicked 3 buttons and downloaded 500 songs with all metadata including lyrics. I can't be fucked to download from youtube like a poor highschool kid in 2011.

.... Highschool kid... 2011... This explains it. This explains ALL.

There is a tonne of music that can inspire without screaming. and not be lo fi. Although its kinda funny because the first thing I thought about when thinking of an example could be considered lo fi.

This is a great track, fills with emotional and inspiration:

The year has no bearing on my age.

And if I was gay as shit for big black men, that's the song I'd share to people. I want relaxation, my negro. I get enough anger and inspiration walking out my front door and seeing all the browns.

Nah man, this is the music to retake europe to. Mmmmm. Fizzy sensation. I can go outside and burn homeless people with vigor again.

When it comes to tech and the internet, age is everything.

mmmm. Nope. It has a modern touch that is tainted by modernism. It sounds like it almost pushes you somewhere, but then it's just light fairy homo sex candy. If you want to go with the lite acoustic feel, you need to look at stuff like derniere volonte

or von thronstahls folk stuff. But I don't like that stuff. This stuff is better:
