Very cool. Importantly this gives you both an AND gate and a NOT gate. This is important because you can combine them to make a NAND gate. What's cool about this is it is possible to make all other gates from NAND. It's a logical proof that you can make anything from it.

But the AND capability may be limited. Apparently but hitting the liquid crystal dot with a second wavelength you convert the emission of the first pulse to the second wavelength. So the two pulses should be additive in the second wave length. In electronic systems this can be converted into an AND gate by using a threshold transistor. But apparently in this optic system a single photon of the second wavelength can trip this effect so the threshold may be too low to chain into a similar gate.

But you could mask a lot of the light and make it a probabalistic AND. It might be better for direct use in AI without the gates. One interpretation of a neural net is as a less discrete abstration of gates. If this system is having trouble being purely discrete, and the goal anyway was to build a non-discrete system (AI) on top of discrete gates, just make the non-discrete system directly.
