Pretty sure side loading as a term comes form programs that are not installed via a predetermined interface and requires all dependents to be manually installed. Not sure if this is true, this is just how I remember the term first forming.
I was curious what it's first use was so I looked it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideloading. Apparently it started with an FTP service and the original use had more to do with data files than programs.
But the way it's mostly used today means circumventing the google play store or apple app store.
If you think about it installing anything through a pre-determined interface at all is kind of modern. For most of computing simply having a file on disk was the main way to install a program, whichever way you want to make it happen. At least in the early 90s when the term first came into being package managers and app stores weren't a thing.
