If being a politician is now a career, any income other than government salary should be banned until 5 years after leaving office, and should still be under a microscope for another 5 years. Any assets should be frozen the entire time they are in office, not accruing any profit, unless it is in U.S. Savings Bonds. Family members' incomes should be scrutinized during this time, as well. Gifts should be treated as income: see former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and his "wedding registry" while leaving office, even tough he had been married for years.
