It depends on how you define narcissism. The dictionary definition is:
Excessive preoccupation with or admiration of oneself. synonym: conceit.
Similar: conceit
A personality disorder characterized by self-preoccupation, need for admiration, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.
Erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development.
By that definition it seems obvious that women are typically more narcissistic than men, taking selfies all the time, food pics, posted to social media for attention and praise. I mean c’mon that’s female behavior.
The authors of this study have conveniently redefined narcissism to mean something else, “agentic self-promotion, striving for uniqueness, and seeking social praise. It is often associated with social potency and initial popularity. The second strategy is narcissistic rivalry. This aspect is more antagonistic and involves self-defense, devaluation of others, and striving for supremacy.”
Yes that’s typical male competitive behavior. But it’s not what everyone understands as “narcissism”, a word that has negative connotations here being used to describe positive, healthy male attributes.
Nice analysis. So they found out that men act like men and decided to problematize being male. If that ain't modern day female behavior, I don't know what is. But now, with Science™!
The findings suggest that younger adults, men, and individuals who perceive themselves as having high social status tend to display higher levels of narcissistic traits, regardless of their cultural background.
The study's authors are 3 women and one man. Funny how they had the guy as the spokesman for the project. Anyhow, I do agree with the 'younger adults and those who feel they're of high social status' parts, but Tiktok women doing their makeup in cars probably want to have a chat with the research team.

There's a large grey area between subjective and objective. If you are the best superficially or practically at something, is that your perception only and thus narcissistic, or would everyone agree - or most likely would some agree and some not.
Having some narcissistic traits doesn't necessarily make you one. Traits may overlap with many personality types. The problem is when it's problematic.

Nothin about women blaming men here if you read it
There's another that blames it on the hormone estradiol. That makes sense, our hormones determine everything we do.
