Bryan Caplan's attempt at measuring it determined that 90% of the value of higher education is value signalling.

Politics and value signalling do not belong in education.

True. The number one thing they should be teaching you is that appeal to authority is meaningless. Now fork over 50k so you can get some letters next to your name so people will believe you. The product ends up antithetical to the initial mission.

It's not entirely without value.

The education system trains compliance, consistency, "manners", obedience, and to wear a tie and fit in. If you don't have manners and stick out, you may cause problems - so you won't be welcomed in the well-paid status quo.

My programmer/analyst job required an associate's, then HR changed it after I worked for 4 years to a bachelor's degree, and then later to a master's degree, and I was unjustly fired because I wasn't qualified for my job anymore. I earned a bachelor's in Business Management to run my own business; I don't need a corporate job. I got John Gaulted myself.
