I recall that during the movie I said something like: 'great how the depth of any lynch film is in the psychoanalysis of the characters'

The incredibly informative Twin Perfect commentary confirms that nearly everything is symbolic in the film, because so much of it's happening 'under the surface', as Lynch would say. And that to me is central to the success of Lynch's films. They're relatable and participatory because they operate in a deep place of our subconscious.
