Well, I consider "selling things for money" posts as one level worse than usual self-promotion (i.e "linking to things you created"). It can easily take over the website if allowed, people love getting money from their posts :)
I think it's ok to sell stuff. But it has to be something people want. If escalating from something you created to something you are selling generally tips the bad taste factor then it should show up in the votes.
If someone wants to post something that's so good that users are glad they linked it, then that's the standard they have to hit. Not easy, but possible. And if they hit it, we'll let them.
