Whenever in forced to use self checkout I spam the help button over the smallest thing and call them over if I see them walking by. Fuck self checkout.
I love self checkout. There is some good queue theory behind it. A single line to multiple machines is better than many lines to a single machine. No lines or at least short ones. If you good at working the machine it's a win.
It also shortens the line for the people who want to use a cashier.
I wonder how geographic it is. One store near me doesn't have them. But same brand has them in a store on the nicer side of town. Both locations have been present at their locations forever. Since before self checkout existed. So they decided to install it in one, but not the other.
Yeah location matters a lot. Mainly blue states but not all. Like in the worst neighborhoods they won't even have any stores, self checkout or not, since no one pays and just steals and even if you hire guards the soros prosecutors don't enforce laws.

A lot of stores stop having them since so many people shoplift and don't pay and I guess it helps having actual cashiers.

I never use self checkout.
Maybe in the rare occasion I have to run in for one item I'll use it.
Other than that, I prefer a person to check out.
