Movie night is in chat starting 8pm Eastern on Saturday. Converted to your time that is
You just need to pick a username.

Sorry I'm a bit late with the movie announcement. I got my butt kicked by a minor disease. After a week of investing all my free time into sleep I'm happy to see that the polls have divined an excelent movie selection. Maybe one of the best combos yet.

  • A Scanner Darkly, staring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downy Jr., and Alex Jones.
  • Fight Club, staring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Belatrix from Harry Potter.

Coming a bit early is always appreciated. It's always good to get the room warm before the movie starts. And it helps first timers avoid the situation where they come into a room that is empty only to find out the room would have been full in a few minutes. It's also a great time to share random clips and do free form content and clips. It actaully helps me share these movie nights a lot more easily, and is a small thank you you can give me for putting it together.

Of course we need the polls for the next round.

It's good to upvote movies that are new to you that you want to see. But it's also good to upvote movies that you have a high confidence are good and not be afraid to downvote movies you know suck. The movies have really gotten better lately, but maybe as a result of emphisizing that. Movies you haven't seen will happen because probability encourages it. But we can't let suck win just because no one has seen it. If you upvote a movie you have seen and know is good, someone else won't have seen it. And if they do the same you'll see something new, but we'll have confidence it's good. It can't hurt to do a little mixture of both.

If you vote mostly for movies you haven't seen that you want to see, that's ok. But please contribute at least a few of your votes based on what you know is good and not so good.

Theme poll for whenever we change it.

We should have a special St. Patrick's triple-feature movie night. My reviews: https://Projex.Wiki/wiki/Recommended_Irish_movies I suspect the low scores are may be from unpleasant content and harsh realities...

Do not confuse this short list with the huge List of Holocaust films.

Wow! The list changed a lot in a week. Last I looked Being John Malkovich (1999) 74%, Sorcerer (1977) 74%, and Primer (2004) 68% were among the highest. Glad to see Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) 81% is up there, the precursor to Snatch (2000) 78% - the former original and the grittiest, the latter more polished, gritty, with pop success - both comparably supreme and edgy in different ways.

Don't know if I can watch A Scanner Darkly (2006) 68% again. The other like it is much better IMO, Waking Life (2001) 75%.

Seen Fight Club (1999) 84% to death, but it's just so good. Besides 82% with Memento and Baraka, the only other movie on the top part of that list above 81% is Inception (2010) 8.4%. Yes they are incredibly original and groundbreaking - but I also consider them pop movies - the rarest of rare. If I could dare to criticize, it's just too bad Nolan doesn't have the edge, or more, of Kubrick. We need more anti-authoritarian, anti-corruption, and deeply layered filmmakers of the highest caliber.

I think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 81% dropped too. Great director, complex writer, heavy movie. Might like to see it a second time. First time I was leaving my work, loosing a gem girl, and floundering and a heavy movie didn't sit on me well. Contrasting with Vanilla Sky in a similar vein, I watched that one to death (should be on the list too).

Best thing is that is seems we all love "Hard-Sci-Fi" and "Exceptionally original filmmaking", as I do - so there will inevitably be more from these themes.

If I encourage people to come early to these. How early should I be suggesting? This is a small thing I've been split over for a while. It seems trivial, but I think it matters.

It sucks to come early to something if you are the only one. If two or five show up early, for the earliest person, it is at least for a bit like they were the only one. Someone is going to be the first.

I think 10 minutes and 30 minutes are the competing times.

10 minutes early is reasonable. It's not a lot of extra time, and is nice to watch some smaller content before getting locked into a single thing. You are doing it on the internet anyway. Might as well do it with others for just a bit. Especially because it helps me share this a lot easier. And is a small thank you you can give me for putting it together.

But the downside of 10 minutes is it is too short to really watch something. Most of us are into longer music. That's like two songs. That's not even enough for everyone to share something.

30 minutes is a better amount of time to really be a free-form block. That's enough time to actually watch more than two random videos. It's more participitory for more people. Gives more people space to learn interface and how to add videos. But it's a lot of time to ask if people aren't really going to use the space that way.

But I think whichever is actually best, it's positive for me to suggest one of the two, to encourage syncronisity and so there is less of the "showing up early solo" effect that a random suggestion of just "early" could produce. People can and of course will, and should, do whatever they want. But suggesting one is an improvement. But which is more worthy of suggestion?

I guess 10 minutes is the encouragement.

But I'll say if 30 minutes sounds attractive to you, and doing a proper free form block is what you want, go for it. If you do, it might be worth saying it. Then someone else is more likely to join you. I think that is a pretty cool way to do things. I've seen it done with other watch parties.

I'll be there early unless something comes up.

Any way there can be a movie on top of chat option?
