I added a change-thumb button.
An alternative way I could have done it was added an extra input field when clicking edit. I'm half considering that option. Cons are it would be extra work, and wouldn't be 100% clear. Pros are that it adds one less item to the "post outer" element, at least for OP. Also changing it would remove the only two word button.
I originally intended this to be only for text posts, but every now and again a website fails to get me a good thumbnail so giving users a way to help fix those is a bonus. I'm sure it can be abused but that will only lead to hilarity.
Of course we need a poll:
![]() | ![]() |
---|
Simpler: Just find and prioritize the magic word "[thumbnail]" + (link) and people can expando click on or link to the thumbnail.
The word+link can be used in context or alone at the beginning, middle or end, lowercase, capitalized, or all caps - maybe the same with "thumb".
It's self evident what the word+link is and does - and folks can follow back to source if they wish.
Interesting idea. It will require more of the documentation we don't have on how to use Matrixdown. But maybe that would be a good addition to Matrixdown. Definitely for the power users. Most people don't know how to do a normal inline image in normal Markdown.
Don't clutter the interface. Adding it both to the thread view and the edit view is clutter. Instead it should be an edit icon in the corner of your own thumbnails in the thread view. Making it part of post editing would be fine as well. So long as it isn't presented while making the initial post, it's tucked away fine. We both agree that the friction to posting should be removed, and simply seeing a bunch of input fields even when they're optional can still deter users.
(On a side note, Rdrama does this right where most of the input fields are optional and they make it clear. They have 'holes' there instead of subreddits but you can submit to none and the input field has the text "optional" in gray until you click inside it. We can take inspiration from that as well imo the category should be optional.)
