More than one user has told me I need to implement reading past mail. It's always funny because it exists. But I think because I slipped the button into the sidebar without it's own section people's eyes never saw it. It doesn't help that there are multiple ways you could title that kind of thing and people are fast scanning for the particular phrase they have in mind.

I did play around a bit with trying to color it more bold than the other buttons since it is a context specific button and people are more likely to have perceptual blindness to something added to an area they've already been trained to ignore. So the color would break that. But the border:9px solid purple, was a direction. I decided not to go with it. And giving it its own section was the right move.

Partially I writing to let people try the color version. 5% of me says ...maybe still. I still think people could miss it.

I'm thinking about adding some toggles to modify read status but this was the immediate thing I could do to improve it. I have to weigh doing that against the other things I'm trying to do.

If you have suggestions for a different title for a button you think people will spot faster I'm open to it. The predecessor of "Read read mail" while a funny poke at English was certainly not it.
