Does smoothing the data actually improve predicting?

This seems like a "discovery" that could be leveraged to fuck shit up on purpose, and blame AI, or some other bullshit.

"We don't know how this could have happened. Suddenly, the AI started smoothing splines, and shooting everyone...". Fuck that.
