I use XFCE(with Dietpi) on a little Orange Pi 3b. It uses 300-400Mb when idle. It's a good desktop environment for single board computers. The little mouse that can!
I don't either. KDE or XFCE are my faves. For older computers, LXQT and XFCE are great choices with a low RAM footprint.
XFCE looks like Windows 95, keeping it simple and small is easier to use and fast.

I'm about to try Cosmic, literally seconds from now. I hope it's not bad.
I'd be surprised if it were. Pop OS! in my experience is the most polished and cohesive distro there is. System 76 know what they're doing.
