Freedesktop is compromised. It's owned by IBM. It actively suppresses development of some open source projects that would benefit users if they were actively maintained. I'd love to find all open source projects being run directly or indirectly by IBM and find alternatives. But we'll start with just Freedesktop.
Software | Alternative |
---|---|
Xorg | X11Libre |
PulseAudio | Pipewire, ALSA, JACK |
DBus | ZeroMQ |
Nouveau | Actual NVIDIA drivers |
Mesa | Also NVIDIA drivers |
Cairo | NanoVG |
NetworkManager | ConnMan, netclt, dhclient, dhcpcd, wpa_supplicant, iwd |
There are some others I can't find alternatives to. Some of these are drop in replacements that a user can swap themselves. That was the primary I was looking for in developing this list. Some of these are alternatives a developer could consider. Cairo and DBus are tools developers select and the alternatives I found would be something a developer could choose to use instead. It would be hard to remove DBus dependency from a system, unlike replacing a network manager.
Helping to grow this list would be appreciated.
