As of March 2026, the UK government is exploring requiring age verification (such as ID) for VPN access as part of the Online Safety Act, primarily to prevent children from bypassing age restrictions. While no complete ban is planned for adults, proposals include requiring "highly effective" age assurance measures, which could limit anonymity for all users. ...Proton VPN, an app offered by Swiss privacy tech firm Proton, told the BBC it had seen a 1800% spike in UK daily sign-ups over the weekend after age check rules took effect on Friday.

I and any child with basic browsing skills can arrange to use a VPN in the UK in order to visit porn sites. The previous law banning UK users from accessing porn without age verification works for those who do not use VPN. Thus it effectively reduced to some extant the ease with which kids could previously see porn sites. But kids can figure out how to us a VPN, so now the UK government will 'explore' this. In the UK anyone can be tracked with the help of the MI5, which has been used to put people in jail who criticize Israel (happened today, and happened before) or promote Nazi stuff (also happened). Would the new ID law help with that tracking? I guess. Is the 'nanny state' trying to gain morality points by restricting kids' VPN access to porn? Certainly.

It's not about the children, they want all your activity tied to an ID.

It is about the children too.
They want to monitor and track the children.
They need to know where the sexy tasty children are.
