How come there are 2 buttons to post (Submit post, Post whenever), and what's the relevance of them having different points associated with each?

On top of what Neol said there are other ways to get bonus points (starting points on a post). The other major way is to have three comments more recent than your most recent post. This is to value post by people who contribute conversation a little more than folks who just link dump. That's not to say we don't value the second person. But we want the person who only posts occasionally to not have their post lost in the torrent.

I'm semi interested in doing something related to being the first to comment in a thread. But I haven't decided what that is, how the code would look, or if it's even the goal.

I need to get an about page together. I'm starting to see that as having very high value for a few reasons. Neol was the person to recommend that to me. I'm starting to come around, in a big way, to that being something I should do.

I notice you did a points change. I think that's a good idea.

I've been talking about documenting Foundations, Goals, FAQ, Tutorials, Wish Lists, and Donate pages forever.

"Post whenever" is for non-urgent posts when you don't want to flood /new - those would be posted later when algorithm will decide, sometimes it would take up to a week. Points are just bonus upvotes to motivate you to use that as opposed to usual "submit post"

IMO, we don't need arbitrary motivations. Fairness should be priority. Let the content win on its own merit.

Also, post whenever does not post it's schedule and is not reliably timed.

Agreed. From a practical standpoint, I'm inclined to use the Submit Post button every time because it's the one on the left and ignore the other one. As the interface goes, I think what xox says above about using an algorithm to sort things is probably going to net you better results in the long run than the button choice.

I just use "Post whenever" when I'm listening to music and want to post like 5 videos in a row, convenient for this use case as it's not important when those would be posted.

it’s great for spreading out a link dump

I use both.

Some things are more timely. Some things can wait. Obviously some things should not be shared.

I've not had better results with the algo (it has never seemed constant), it's never been shared, and I probly wouldn't understand it.
