Since chat is just a chronological stream of events perhaps it can have an announcement each time a thread is posted to the site with a link. This can increase engagement and at least show some passage of time inside the chat since people want timestamps so badly but I am not requesting those I agree that they are unnecessary.
(Timestamps will require more width for the chat box while it's too narrow right now I really just vote against that request.)
To save space with the time stamp, simply display day of the month and time without seconds (7-20:45) and when you hover over it the full stamp comes up (2025-04-07 20:45:82 est). Most comments aren't very long so no great loss.
Just because you don't see the utility doesn't mean they are unnecessary.
Wouldn't that be a lot of content in chat? It would basically be another /new. Maybe I could use it to reward posting when the site is slow, which is something I want to do.
You mentioned trying to concentrate user interactions to a more concentrated time. I agree. Huge value in that. The other important factor is the opposite one, raising the floor of activity in the slowest periods.
