DeArrow provides alternative, user-submitted titles for Youtube videos as a way of combatting clickbait. They're objective. In order to not be part of the dopamine addiction epidemic perhaps it'd be good to pull Youtube videos from their database instead of Youtube itself.
Interesting. I was just thinking about project like this and or incorporating it into Gvid us user submitting ad block ranges to just skip the ads.
Looking at their sample titles they don't look that bad. Of course there can be selection bias. In theory that's the best ones they have. But they could also query faster than youtube's anyway because they likely have a lot of title's cached. Progressive web-apps and inconsistent use of the various meta-data formats has made it so you basically have to use a third party to get full coverage. And the one I'm using is fucking slow.
Maybe I could provide both youtube's and DeArrow's as a clickable.
Yeah, I think providing both titles is the best solution, something like "Title [Alternative title]".
I'd probably just use colons.
Suggested titles
Youtube: <underline>I stayed the night illegally in a museum</underline>
DeArrow: <underline>I arranged to sleep in a museum</underline>
If it's just one title then it's
Suggested title: <underline>Title to news article that's probably just as bad as youtube</underline>
I'd keep it simple and just provide DeArrow I think you have a tendency to overburden users with options. If they want the title to be something else they can manually change it. DeArrow titles are always useful, they're either improvements or there is no user-submitted title and it's simply what Youtube provides.
Have you tried Freetube? If you enable DeArrow on that, it will show DeArrow titles in the overview, but once you click on it, give the Youtube title. Using that for a while can give you a good impression of the changes they make overall.
The problem is I don't want to make users feel gaslit. If they already see the title on youtube and without explanation we fill in a different one that it going to be confusing. Most users will have no idea what DeArrow is. Some people may want the more fun title and making them do extra work to copy and paste the original over the suggested one will feel frustrating.
