I like a more tech-oriented portal but it seems like the filtering is too aggressive. Oftentimes it says there are comments but I can't see any when I open the thread. Moreover, nothing appears on /c/UX so that shows tech posts are caught as well.
Is this intended behaviour? I'm not sure if this is some algorithm that's filtering more than intended or simply a bug. If the filtering is intended could you add the option to reveal hidden content?
Well obviously. That is the concept.
It does involve actively adjusting the lists. It is super aggressive. It is supposed to be. That 100% matches my description of it. It's a curated selection. The way to see something different is to go to a different party. Duh.
That's like going on a curated group cheese-tasting tour in Paris and then asking why Kraft Singles aren't there. Can't the group get some Kraft singles? How do I open up the Kraft Singles option? If that's what you want, then obviously pick a different tour.
I may need to update it a touch. When I made the current lists, the site was almost all news, to hit the submatrix target it had to be pretty clamped.
Then also, it's not managed that frequently, so it's done with broad strokes. Here is the number 1 rule with parties. No one is owed any presence at any party. This will be a bit better when I open up party creation to everyone. That's the top thing I'm working on.
I added recalibrating Submatrix to my todo. I haven't done it in about two weeks.
Also, the goal with parties is they will be group managed. Submatrix is just a sample. When the real ones come out, managed by you guys, teams should be able to update parties more frequently if they want to.
But yes, Submatrix is a pretty tight velvet rope. That's it's job. With me not having updated it in a while there may be things on both sides of the rope that need to go to the other side.
Filtering it down to individual comments seems like it's taking it too far. People end up speaking in a bubble if their comments become invisible. What even is the heuristic for hiding comments? I hope it isn't the user's post history.
For example, this comment is hidden on Submatrix even though it's on-topic and insightful.
Something gets lost when comments are filtered. Sometimes there are dumb jokes to be made. These would get filtered likely, but they are what make the community a fun place to visit. The social aspect is essential and it's being intereferred with when one feels policed based on the content of their posts. Moreover, algorithms aren't able to perfectly capture what humans want to see and what they don't want to see because it's based on feeling rather than computation. That's what the voting system is for. It already orders comments.
Regardless, the site is still too small to filter out comments. Any comment is better than an absence of it right now. And the counter isn't updated after the filter, that's what makes it look buggy in the first place.
