It literally kills people. I have a hospital near me where the ER is basically a death mill. It's not entirely their fault, besides obviously their contribution to these CON laws. At a certain point of volume, triage becomes trying to kill fewer people while claiming you did something for everyone to cover your butt legally.
I had some family go to it. The paramedics had asked another family member if they'd rather have them taken to a further hospital while saying they are supposed to take them to the first hospital, but on request, they can change that. They didn't get the hint. That family member died. Real story.
If paramedics say they are supposed to take you to A but could take you to B, have them take you to the second one. They wouldn't have suggested breaking the standard if they didn't have a reason.
I have a family member with a similar story, but lived to tell the tale. In my state, a doctor's office can not be affiliated with a medical organization unless there is an affiliated hospital nearby (I think 50 miles). The rules from this video apply, so there has been major fighting among them, to the point of wining and dining the communities where they want to put their hospitals. There can be only one in a certain area. These are smaller, less staffed and only built to expand their territory of doctor networks. We were told that my family member was dying and couldn't be saved. A the advice of a doctor not from this smaller hospital, we moved them to a larger, major hospital and they started to recover immediately.
