Supposedly it's time for China to start making soybean orders, and apparently no orders are coming in. Harvest season is later this month through November. We've already planted the crops.

Obviously this sucks for farmers but maybe this is a windfall for consumers? What should we do with this soy? We have options.

  • Eat tofu
  • Make miso and soy sauce
  • Make a lot of mayo
  • Feed it to cattle
  • Trash it

I suppose it depends on if you think soy is healthy or not. If we can find a healthy outlet for it we'd also be helping the farmers by consuming it.

One additional thought is maybe we sell it to Europe. China is going to need to eat. If they import zero soy what will they eat instead? The idea is food consumption is going to be pretty static because even a 10% caloric deficit is about the limit of what can be sustained. If they import from other Asia Pacific countries those countries will need to import from wealthier countries. So a more likely import is grain from Russia. Normally Europe is the export destination. But Russia and Europe are already reluctant trading partners. But we can complete the ring if Europe has too little grain and we have too much soy.. guess what Europe, your diet is about to get a little more soy.
