I just built some elephant-proof shelving today, among many other things.
In my NYC apartment I build lots of shelving there too, among other things.
I didn't carve, but had a drill and jigsaw. More importantly I didn't have a TV or Internet, nor that much free space to maneuver (That's not a simple setup with so many tools and so much lumber.) - but I did have motivation and creativity.
Tight spaces call for tight ingenuity for tight solutions.
