For two seasons I was in the top 2% of players for a fighting game called Brawhalla. Was playing way too much... Game seems simple and kinda kidish but on a technical level it's complex making it very hard to excel at. In the end they started adding more fighters with over powered and unbalanced moves.
Also the game had no dedicated servers. Fine for playing regional East Coast but West Coast, Europe or god forbid Asian regions were just a shit show. You could play a crazy good player one day and loose the match without landing a hit. The next day play them again but this time as the host and they wouldn't even land a hit. Was so frustrating I eventually quit but it was hard and I even relapsed before finally tossing out my arcade fighting controller ensuring I would never play it again.
Another good one is Factorio. can play that until the end of time.
Galaga
