What are you doing for computer autonomy ("comptonomy"?)?

For example:

  • Counter-surveillance, privacy, personal archives, and local A.I.
  • Hosting sites.
  • Independent social networks.
  • Operating systems.
  • RAID arrays.
  • Self-hosted servers.
  • Other...

Second only to freedom of communication, it seems to me computing autonomy is among the most critical issues needing raised awareness. Am I overreacting?

Correct. The close source subsystems of modern computers are a real problem. Not going too far off the rails, the group that Daniel Liszt, AKA Dark Journalist calls "X Protect" likely are the primary holders of the tools to completely hijack your computer and do whatever they want with it.

Sometimes they simply kill, but there are many ways to destroy someone, including framing them as a sexual predator. Scary shit man.

On another note, I do have something that is kinda crazy! When I can obtain a custom piece of quartz, I am going to attempt to build an adhoc quantum computer and jailbreak the fuck out all of my devices. Maybe get a load of BTC too, so I can afford to develop more advanced tech.

Gonna have to keep that stuff in the dark though.....they still kill.

Matrix and gvid. Also working on an OS called responsive OS.

But I think a more interesting and simple one is unplug computing. If you have a laptop (battery power), allocate some time you are off network and off power. If you can't do something productive on a computer without being jacked into the system, are you really autonomous? No search. No AI. Just your skills and the resources you had the forethought to get onto your device ahead of time. It forces you to have a setup where you can do useful things without the system.

I've been on one flavor of Linux or another since 2004, and will never go back. And if Linux implodes (which it looked like might happen a couple of years ago, for a moment), I'll shift over to one of the BSDs.

BSD will sometimes work on your hardware and will sometimes not. I think it's worthwhile for folks who have the time to do a practice install just to find out if the jump can be made easily for them. Nothing like needing a new system only to find out this is going to be as hard a saving an apollo mission. And only finding out very late into the process.

Also, for whatever reason BSD takes a long time to physically install. Really long. So it's smart to plan it around a time you'll not be using your computer for a long while. Best to start before work, or sleep, or both together really.

I've had a OMV (Open media vault) NAS server for a while. Just upgraded it and added Next Cloud giving me a complete cloud storage solution that I own and operate. (AI was a big help in implementing it!) Next step is self hosting my business website/E-mail.

Power wise I estimate I have enough reserve to operate 2 weeks plus off grid at current operating levels (Generators/fuel supply) and could easily push that to 1 month plus with rationing.

I've all but ditched windows in favour of Linux (Mint). My windows 10 build still has access to updates as I qualified using the Pro version. When that ends I will move to 100% Linux setup.

I've begun research into making my own router. Just waiting to pull the trigger on the $500 plus mini PC I will need. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3RI4DjFBzw&t=1250s)

I've self hosted an AI (using an AMD video card non the less) but have since moved more towards ChatGPT as 6.1 is amazing for what I need but I'll be looking to update the local AI to a better version and run it with OpenClaw. It's on my to do list!

I completely agree with you that computing autonomy is a very important and a totally under discussed topic.I do believe that AI may provide a solution though. Similar to my recent post about a vibe coded version of Adobe Creative Suite, I doubt we are far off from someone creating an open source Windows compatible OS alternative to Windows. Visually identical and compatible with windows minus all the Microsoft bullshit.

Despite the mass push towards terrible subscription/rental models I truly believe AI can salvage the situation.

It's been at least a dozen years since I was looking at making a router. I can't even remember the open-source stuff (I suppose I could look), but the thing that really impressed me was that it would have a (large) hard drive that saved all your traffic, so you wouldn't necessarily have to re-download stuff you'd already browsed/fetched, big and small. And of course you could just copypasta the stuff you wanted to save longer, add to your library, or archive.

I doubt we are far off from someone creating an open source Windows compatible OS alternative to Windows. Visually identical and compatible with windows minus all the Microsoft bullshit.

How about if someone made a WINUX (or whatever if this name is taken) operating system that was as familiar and easy and documented as Windows but as flexible and powerful as Linux - AND actually works magnificently (without spying on you)?
