Atko started Voat.co, formerly Whoaverse, in 2014. It become possibly the most popular Reddit alternative to date. Maybe Lemmy has reached a comparable scale. No other Reddit alternative has been able to reach close to the scale of Voat in its peak. But Atko stepped down in 2017 and handed the keys off to PuttItOut, who himself stepped down three years later. What made Atko lose motivation? Atko has since made another Reddit alternative, https://flingup.com, which isn't nearly as successful as his first run at making a Reddit alternative.
What made a once in a lifetime chance to really compete with Reddit go sour? What could people have done to prevent that?
I don't know enough about Voat, its history, or management to weigh in specifically, nor general ideas about forums we wouldn't already know.
FlingUp has a very classy GUI. I see on the front page: https://flingup.com/c/x0x7Projects
Maybe we can plan ahead and dedicate the month of March to developing some new branding (logo, mascot, colours, guides, documentation, etc.), GUI ergonomics, and CSS themes for GoatMatrix? With a makeover it could appeal to more folks (for better and worse) which would hopefully reduce the post/bonus meddling, and be a catalyst for donations (and maybe even fund some part-time work for those capable of working on projects - like a PR campaign and promotional content). March 13th I'm throwing a St. Patrick's Freedom Party, which shouldn't occupy too much energy, and nothing specific after that.
Probably same paid trolls that ruined saidit and are trying to ruin this site. Carswell and pals. It's frustrating too as I try to warn the guy running this site but he's buddies with carswell and d3 apparently.
Wasn't it people who were offensive for the sake of being offensive that Atko didn't really build the website for that made him think, hmm, I'm not putting time into this. IDK, maybe they were paid. They killed the website by killing the motivation of the person holding it up.
That's the thing about free speech. You have to do good things with it if you want to make a case for free speech. It's like blinking yellow lights. If you install more of those at traffic signals, you are giving people more discretion. They can make good use of that discretion over hard ridged rules. But if you have even 10% of people who perceive the yellow light as "I can do whatever I want." And go out of their way, turning into on coming traffic if only to fuck with those cars; Well, they are making a case against blinking yellow lights. They ruin it for everyone.
Imagine trying to talk to one of these drivers and asking them to think, and they said, "I'm just promoting the values of blinking yellow lights," while actively making a case of how the world turns to shit if you give shitty people freedom. We went from having a large site that supported free speech being the top competitor to Reddit, to that being Lemmy.
So does that mean that you don't give freedom to shitty people? I happen to think people can have more than one mode. If you set the tone of the environment to not socially reinforce shitty people, they shift to one of the other social modes they hopefully have in their deck of personality traits. And if they don't have any capacity to be anything but an intentionally shitty person, hopefully they move on out of boredom.
The question is, how do you communicate that a place is a coffee shop and not a dive bar? Because if someone doesn't read it right and thinks that it is, then their dive bar behavior will signal to other people that it's a dive bar, and it spreads. Pretty soon, free speech becomes associated with being the shittiest, most unintelligent person possible. We know that anti-free speech isn't very intelligent either because then you get reinfroced group think and managed silence available to support corruption. So if free speech can be co-opted to become synonymous with retardation, and power mod Reddit and Lemmy lead to retardation, I guess that's all humanity can have?
That, or we can become developed people who understand that being given a blinking yellow light is reason to be more decent rather than less.
You can't even say 'tranny' on lemmy, so left that fast. It may as well be ran by redditnazis at that point.
Depends who is hosting it.
I was trying to get others to host instances and together we'd form the Fringe Deplorables Web Ring network to counter the Federation of Leftards.
Is this written by AI?
I left SaidIt two years ago to come here.
You've posted twice here while provoking in comments.
Who's the troll?
Maybe you are in the wrong forum.
