Trump has yet to figure out the Iran doesn't want a deal. They want the US to admit they don't have soviergnty over other countries. They want the US to realize it's only option is to go home and mind its business. Like every other country on the planet does.

Iran has a very defensible territory, similarly the US's greatest defensive asset is that it's surrounded by lots of water on all sides. It would be extremely difficult for any country to invade the US mainland. That said, we've now seen the limits of offensive US military operations and hopefully they'll reign in some of their imperialist ambitions.

The Afghanistan war cost us $8 trillion, 200k dead including 4k US military. The withdrawal was a huge failure and as you say the Taliban are back in charge and stronger than ever. The only ones "messing around" were the United States and it was a disaster.
