The new theme for movie nights is "exceptionally original filmmaking." With that we are laying the Cyberpunk theme to rest. And of course, we need a nomination thread to make a big poll from.

I think this one will be a bit tricky. I'm not someone who knows what films were original in how they were produced. I think most of us don't. So we may be relying on the knowledgeable few to help us get a list going. But once that's out of the way, the poll that we get out of it will be easy to use for common folk like myself. But thankfully there is more than one way a film can be original so that may make things easier. Here are a few examples I could find.

  • Structural. Example, Victoria. The entire film is a single take.
  • Technical / Pipeline Innovation. Example, Avatar. Completely new level of CGI for its time.
  • Constraint-Driven. Example, Tangerine. Filmed on iPhones.
  • Narrative. Example, Memento. Non-linear timeline.
  • Animation / Process Innovation. Example, Loving Vincent. Every frame hand-painted in oil by hundreds of artists.

With that little bit of help I got from some research we see there are a lot of ways a film can be original. Within each category there are many films that did something unique.

FYI, some folks like to get fancy with the formatting. I don't end up using that data myself in the poll because I get consistency from pulling the data from an API. So extra formatting can be nice for other people to look at, but the only data I ever use is the title and maybe a TMDB link. Keeping the films in English also helps.
